History

With over 17,000 members, NSBE has grown into an international network of chapters (80 pre-college, 270 collegiate, and 75 professional) that are coordinated through six regional zones and governed by a National Executive Board. NSBE had its genesis in 1975 at a national conference comprised of African American engineering students throughout North America.

These students wanted to promote the recruitment, retention and successful graduation of African Americans in engineering. They recognized then, as we still do today, that there are barriers to minority participation and success in the engineering fields. Without strident, proactive and unified efforts, these barriers cannot be overcome. NSBE works in a myriad of ways to see that these efforts are carried out.
